Stay Connected, Even in Tough Outdoor Conditions
Heat and dust don’t just make your day uncomfortable. They can quietly interfere with the performance of your hearing devices.
Fortunately, small daily habits make a big difference.
If you spend time hiking, gardening, or working outdoors, your hearing aids are more exposed than when you’re inside painting, reading or streaming. That’s okay. With the right care, your devices can keep up.

What Heat and Dust Actually Do to Your Hearing Aids
Heat can affect hearing aid internals in a few ways:
- Batteries drain faster or stop holding a charge. Excessive heat accelerates the internal chemical reactions of lithium-ion batteries, shortening their lifespan.
- Internal components can weaken over time. Heat causes expansion and contraction of delicate soldered and glued connection points, which can introduce interference and weaken signal strength.
- The outer shell may warp with prolonged exposure. Medical-grade acrylics and polymers, most used in hearing aid manufacturing, are designed to function between -13 and 158 degrees. Hot cars can reach 180 degrees or higher, enough to warp hearing aid casings.
Dust adds a different kind of stress. According to the Hearing Industries Association, dust and debris can clog microphones and receivers, reducing sound clarity and overall performance.1
Protect Your Devices Outdoors
You don’t need a complicated routine. Just a few consistent habits:
- Wipe your hearing aids down at the end of the day; dust, sweat and oils build up quickly.
- Store your devices somewhere cool and dry. Drying boxes are fantastic for overnight storage, and many models also charge your device while drying.
- Store your hearing aids in a protective case when you’re not wearing them.
Routine cleaning matters more than most people expect. Debris like dust and wax can build up quickly and affect both performance and lifespan. For that reason, we recommend weekly deep cleanings at home and professional cleanings every six to 12 months or when you notice performance issues.2
Patients in Redding and Shasta County often come to us after a summer of outdoor activity when their devices just don’t sound the same. It’s rarely one big problem, but typically a series of small issues that have accumulated over time.
Take Action Early
You might notice subtle changes first. A slight muffled sound. A bit of static. One hearing aid may seem weaker than the other.
That’s often the first sign your device could benefit from a routine clean or check.
When to be extra careful
Some situations need a little more attention:
- Long days in the heat
- Yard work or dusty environments
- Exercise or heavy sweating
- Windy conditions that kick up debris
You don’t have to avoid these. Just plan for a quick wipe-down or storage break afterward.
