Hearing aids are the most common form of treatment for hearing loss. Research has found that close to 28.8 million U.S. adults could benefit from using hearing aids.
If you are considering hearing aids to treat your hearing loss and have ear piercings, you may be curious as to if you can wear them both at the same time.
It’s Usually OK to Wear Earrings with Hearing Aids
Common ear piercings, like those on the earlobe, should in no way interfere with your ability to use hearing aids. You should be able to continue to wear both without it affecting your hearing aid’s fit or performance.
However, if you have multiple piercings on your outer ear (pinna), this could potentially make it difficult for your hearing aids to fit correctly. During your fitting process, you and your audiologist can discuss what style of hearing aid might be best to work with your piercings and see whether or not you may need to remove some to get the hearing help that you need.
A good fit is essential to having the best experience with your hearing aids. A poorly fitted device can cause issues like feedback, poor sound quality and increase the risk that your hearing aid falls out and gets damaged.
Can Having Your Ears Pierced Cause Hearing Loss?
In general, ear piercings should not affect your ability to hear or increase your risk of hearing loss. However, if you develop an infection at the site of the piercing, there is a slight possibility that fluid from the infection can cause a blockage in the ear canal and lead to temporary hearing loss until the infection clears. This is more likely to occur in piercings that are closer to the ear canal.
To minimize the risk of infection, follow any aftercare instructions provided at the time of your piercing. This may include washing the area with antibacterial soap and making sure to wash your hands thoroughly before touching your piercing.
Why Choose Hearing Aids?

- Increase your confidence in your ability to communicate at work and social events.
- Make it easier to connect with loved ones at a family barbeque or when out enjoying milkshakes at Dude’s Drive Inn.
